Life and Death on the Platte has been a constant reminder of how fragile the clay vessels we inhabit are. Well said is the scripture that says “O LORD, thou art our father, we are the clay, and thou our potter, and we all are the work of thy hand.2” This has been true around here where we live. While the inner city finds itself battling guns, violence, gangs, and drugs; we have those problems but not as big. Around here there are things that can bring life to a halt. One minute your alive, the next moment rescuers are looking for you. This was again brought home the last two weeks or so.

I was up at the time, which was very early in the morning as I was taking care of business for the Lord at the time. Sirens pierced the night as they came closer until I felt they were next door. We live only a stones throw from the Platte river. It can be dangerous. Not too long ago a young women perished when she was on drugs and wandered out of her house and went down to the river. Late at night on the bank she apparently fell and hit her head killing her instantly from what I know of it. They found her the next day alongside the river. Now again a young women whom no one knows was heard screaming for help. When 911 arrived, the fire rescue guys tried to throw a rope to her but could not reach her. Somehow she had walked onto the ice and fell into the cold river and hung on barely until they arrived. Before they could do anything else, she slipped under the water.
To date they have brought in dogs, air boats, and people to search the river but so far no sign of her. I was raised around rivers here in this neck of the woods. I spent endless hours in water, in lakes, in rivers, and never saw it as a danger. I have spent days on ice on the lake fishing. I have spent hours and hours as a young boy ice skating in the dead of winter on the canal ice. Never did I once have trouble. Yet, I have seen somehow, some way people get into trouble. They pay for it with their lives.
The scenery is beautiful around the country we live in and the Rockies are a 5 hour to five hour drive. The Wind Rivers a 5 hour drive, and the Big Horns a 3 hour drive. Up in the high country we have camped, hunted, and stayed in tents at 20 below zero. I have had my truck quit on me going over a major pass near Dubois. At the time the roads were icy , it was below zero, and my truck quit. My friend and I had to hitch hike riding straddle on a big bull elk in the back of a hunters truck who picked us up. It was freezing, but we had a ride and they took us to my Dad’s cousin’s place an hour and a half away. Nevertheless, if the truck would of rolled back on that icy road, there would have been trouble. If it of gone off the side of the road, it would mean death. Nevertheless, Gods protection and grace somehow always brought me through things.

Western Garden Survival …a healthy serving of the Old Tyme Pioneer spirit with faith, gardens, western values
As I watched the rescue and search efforts going on I thought of that woman and wanted them to find her. Life can b
e short and death can come at a moments notice. So today on the Western Garden Survivalist, I offer this tribute and heart felt condolences to the young women who lost her life. We still have no idea who she is, whether she is married, or if she has kids and a husband. In the eyes of God, however, all souls are precious and life is a gift from his benevolence.
On this site we take time to deal with issues of life and death. We spend time writing on survival, family, gardens, the west, and down home remedies and more. It is about survival in the West where we live, but we focus on Gardens and survival. Surviving what is coming, being prepared, and knowing in the end, the LORD is the one in whom we ultimately hope, trust in, and belong. But we have reminders in the world on a daily basis that fills the news. Wars, violence, murders, and more. Yet amidst it all, there is a God who loves us and cares and in him we trust.
Take care to seek him today,
-
